The Guardian

The Guardian Media Group engaged cleverTV to launch a brand new free to play fantasy football game for the 2008/09 English Premier League season.

Dubbed "thinking man's fantasy football" the squad game was the first of its kind to offer users up to 10 different team formations and the ability to select from a "defensive midfielders" category. For the first time in mainstream fantasy football Javier Mascherano could potentially earn just as many points as Fernando Torres.

The use of Opta statistics allows players to be awarded for a diverse range of actions including shots on target, accurate crosses, tackles won, interceptions, clearances and saves.

The game went from the drawing board to launch in less than 8 weeks and was built using the latest flash technology.

The Guardian Media Group were delighted to secure Renault as the game's official sponsor and as well as branding throughout the game a number of very popular sponsor sub leagues (New Megane Cup League) have run offering additional prizes. Read more about the Renault sponsorship programme
